News : Lanarkshire South Claim 2010 Andrew Hamilton Trophy

Lanarkshire South were crowned the 2010 Scottish Cities and Counties Champions following a fiercely contested final against Mid Lothian who missed out by just 6 shots at Bainfield Bowling Club today.

Claiming the Andrew Hamilton Trophy for the third time since 2006, the South section runners up had to fight to the very last bowl to lift the silverware 117-111.

Alan Davidson, SBA Secretary of the Events and Championship Committee said, “It was a very tight match from the outset, nip and tuck all the way which made for a tense final for the 300 strong crowd who came along to support the finalists today.

“The lead changed two or three times and there was never more than 12 shots between them before Mid Lothian missed out at the last end.”

Lanarkshire South have enjoyed an excellent record in this event in recent times taking the trophy in both 2006, when they beat Angus in the final and 2008 when they beat Ayrshire. They had come through the hard way to win this time around having finished runners-up in the South Section to Dumfries and so had to face defending champions West Lothian, who had been the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals, at that stage. They then went on to edge out Renfrewshire West 120-118 in a thrilling semi-final.

For Mid-Lothian there was some consolation to be had in knowing that simply reaching the final had been something of a breakthrough since they have not reached that stage since 1975 when they beat Lanarkshire in the final.
