News : South Ayrshire Council Gives Free Greens at National Champs

Scotland’s best young bowlers will take part in the National Joint Championships for the first time at the National Bowling Centre at Northfield this week, thanks to support from South Ayrshire Council.

The flagship event will attract more than 7,000 spectators through its gates during the course of the week who will witness the coming together of three key national outdoor bowling organisations for the first time.

While the inaugural Joint National Championships took place last year, the inclusion of the Youths finals is a new addition to the showpiece championships, giving a platform for the nation’s new generation of bowlers to perform in front of much larger crowds.

The Scottish Young Bowlers Association’s National Finals will kick start proceedings on Tuesday (27 July), for which South Ayrshire Council will provide greens free of charge.

Action will continue through the week at the Ayrshire venue, as the Scottish Bowling Association and Scottish Women’s Bowling Association host their integrated men’s, ladies and juniors championships with the respective national finals taking place on Sunday 1 August.

The Council will also provide additional facilities for players and supporters with a tented village, additional toilets and extra public transport to and from the facility.

Alan McMillan, CEO of the SBA said, “We are extremely grateful to South Ayrshire Council for their support of what is the most prestigious national event of the year for all of the governing bodies involved. The additional facilities they provide during the course of the event will aid the smooth running of the tournament and will help to add to the experience of a successful championships.

He added, “I am also delighted that the Youths finals has been included in the programme in an important year for the men’s and women’s game as we approach unification of the two governing bodies at the end of 2010.”

South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan said, “We are pleased to support and welcome the National Joint Championships to Northfield, which is a world-class facility and very much the home of Scottish bowling. South Ayrshire has a very proud history and association with the sport of bowling, so it’s very fitting the event is taking place here.

“Combining the championships in this way will open up the sport to a much wider audience and showcase the skills and abilities of the talented bowlers we have in this country. I look forward to seeing as many people as possible attending the championships and I hope they take the time to enjoy all South Ayrshire has to offer.”

Play gets underway at 9.30am each day and 9.00am on Sunday.
