News : First National Youths Final at Joint Champs

The first Youths Finals staged as part of the National Joint Championships at Northfield in Ayr was deemed a great success by organisers who estimated that their competitors played in front of crowds in excess of 900 people.

Ross Dennis, Treasurer and Past President of the Scottish Young Bowlers Association said, “Our finals are our major event of the domestic season which everyone looks forward to and to be part of the National Joint Championships was tremendous and really added a sense of occasion to proceedings.

“Our U17’s played exceptional bowls in front of much larger crowds than usual and they really set the standard for the rest of the week.”

The finalists had to win four district qualifying matches to make it to the round robin format finals, and a further two matches for a place in the final.

The Pairs final provided the closest contest, with West Lothian’s Winchburgh duo Aaron Barrett and Blair O’Hanlon taking the title with a 6-4 win over Kennoway’s Lewis Grieve and Ross Hutchison.

In the Singles event, Carricknowe’s Stephen Pringle defeated defending champion Ross Thomson from East Lothian 15-3 and Inverkeithing’s Ryan Learmonth, Leon Dunster and James Bone took the Triples crown with a 15-4 victory over Ayrshire North’s Blacklands.

Dennis added, “We are hopeful that we can make our finals part of the National Championships again next year and are very grateful for all the support we received at Northfield, as well as free greens for the day from South Ayrshire Council.”
